A State Named Anger (17) (A Curse)

Muse
I'm dying
As if you care
You love (in) words
While I... wear and tear

Muse, when I die
You won't be there
May my mem'ry haunt you
more than you can bear

  1. Metallica (along with Anthrax, Slayer, and Megadeth, which featured former Metallica guitarist Dave Mustaine) was one of the founding thrash metal bands, characterized by fast percussive beats and complex, low-register guitar riffs, high-register guitar solos, and double bass drumming. (Before Malcolm Dome coined the term in a review of the Anthrax song “Metal Thrashing Mad” in “Kerrang!” magazine in 1984, Metallica frontman James Hetfield called it “speed metal” or “power metal.”) Metallica has released 10 studio albums, 4 live ones, 5 extended plays, 39 music videos, and 37 singles, has won 8 Grammy Awards, and debuted 6 consecutive albums at number one on the Billboard 200. Hetfield and drummer Lars Ulrich formed the band in Los Angeles in 1981; Mustaine joined soon after, and the band cut its first song on “Metal Massacre,” a 1982 compilation album; then bassist Ron McGovney joined, and the band began making live performances. Their second gig was as the opening act for the British heavy metal band Saxon. In late 1982 McGovney was replaced by Cliff Burton. In April 1983 Mustaine was replaced by Kirk Hammett, just before the band recorded its first album, “Metal Up Your Ass,” and Mustaine went on to form Megadeth in 1983. The new line-up played its first gig four days after Mustaine’s departure, supported by the original Anthrax band. Because distributors refused to market the album under its original title, it was renamed “Kill “Em All.” It did not sell well but helped cement the band’s underground metal fanbase. Its second album, “Ride the Lightning” (1984) did somewhat better, but it was their third album, “Master of Puppets” (1986) that established them as stars; the album reached number 29 on the Billboard 200 and spent 72 weeks on the chart. Touring in Europe in 1986, their bus driver lost control near Dörarp, Sweden, causing it to overturn several times, killing Burton; he was replaced by Jason Newsted. Their next studio album was “...And Justice for All” (1988), which reached #6 on the Billboard 200 and garnered them their Grammy nomination. Newsted left Metallica in 2001, and the band’s producer Bob Rock filled in until a permanent replacement – Robert Trujillo -- could be found in 2003, when the band released its 8th studio album, “St. Anger.” Its title track is credited to Rock, Hetfield, Hammett, and Ulrich:

    Saint Anger around my neck
    Saint Anger around my neck
    He never gets respect
    Saint Anger around my neck
(You flush it out, You flush it out)
    Saint Anger around my neck
(You flush it out, You flush it out)
    He never gets respect
You flush it out, You flush it out
    Saint Anger around my neck
(You flush it out, You flush it out)
    He never gets respect
Fuck it all and no regrets
I hit the lights on these dark sets
I need a voice to let myself
    To let myself go free
Fuck it all and fucking no regrets
I hit the lights on these dark sets
    Medallion noose, I hang myself
    Saint Anger around my neck
    I feel my world shake
    Like an earth quake
    Hard to see clear
Is it me? Is it fear?
I'm madly in anger with you
I'm madly in anger with you
I'm madly in anger with you
    I'm madly…
