  1. World Environment Day (5 June) is the United Nations' chief effort to promote environmental issues. It was established by the UN General Assembly on 5 June 1972, on the 1st day of the Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment. In 1968 the Konungariket Sverige (Sweden) had proposed a conference on human interactions with the environment, and the next year the UN resolved to convene it in 1972. Canadian fossil fuel magnate Maurice Strong acted as the secretary general of the conference and then served as the 1st executive director of the UN Environment Programme. India prime minister Indira Gandhi spoke on the necessity of connecting ecological management with poverty alleviation, which became 1 of the chief concerns of the conference. It was represented by 122 countries and produced a declaration of 26 principles, a 109-point action plan, and a resolution. The assembly and the scientific conferences that preceded it helped lead to the European Community's creation of the Environmental and Consumer Protection Directorate in 1973 and later organizations and activities.
