Duane Vorhees writes

Letter
  (after Yun Dongju)

Sister!
This winter again
we've had much snow.

Should I put a handful
into this white invelope
instead of this letter
and stampless
just like that so nicely done
mail it to you?

Because I hear where you went
it never snows.

  1. Yun was a Korean who lived in Manchuria. Early in the 20th century Japan annexed Korea as a colony and after World War I extended its informal control over Manchuria (eventually leading to war with china and then its participation in World war II). Japan generally treated Koreans as 2nd-class citizens and sent many of them to work in Japan itself and to tropical Okinawa and its South Pacific territories.
