Fourteen-year-old Yana Tamocheva became lost in the in the Tukhtetsky district of the Krasnoyarsky kray in the Russian Federation while picking blueberries with her mother and sisters. Despite heavy rains and cold nights, she survived by eating berries and grass and drinking from streams. A 6-day search by 230 police, national guard, and military personnel, plus volunteers, was conducted. Some 75 km of roads were searched, along with 50 km of the Chindat river and 95 km of the Chulym river, and 2 drones searched 700 sq mi of taiga. She was found 16 km from her home. A month earlier 15-year-old Nikita Sosunkov disappeared in the same area and was found dead after 2 weeks. He had probably been killed by wild animals. The kray covers an area of 2,339,700 sq km (903,400 sq mi), almost 1/4 the size of Canada, the 2nd-largest nation; it comprises about 13% of the Russian Federation's total area but only has less than 2% of its population. It occupies almost 1/2 of Siberia, and because of its remoteness it was long used as a place of exile for political enemies.
