I saw the Spring

The République des Seychelles in the Indian ocean has 115 islands, the largest of which is Mahé. It was named after Bertrand-François Mahé de La Bourdonnais, a former governor of the Isle de France (Mauritius) who captured Mayyazhi (spelled Mayé, Mahé, or Mahié in French) for the Compagnie française pour le commerce des Indes orientales in 1741 as part of the French conquest of southern India. The Seychelles were uninhabited throughout most of recorded history; they were discovered by Vasco da Gama in 1503, but the 1st recorded landing was made by Alexander Sharpeigh's crew in 1609 during the 4th voyage of the British East India Company. The islands were havens for pirates until the French began to take control starting in 1756 when Nicholas Morphey laid a Stone of Possession on Mahé; they were named after Jean Moreau de Séchelles in his last year as Louis XV's controller-general of finances. But Jean Baptiste Quéau de Quincy surrendered the islands to Henry Newcombe the day after he arrived at Mahé in 1794, and the British took full control when Mauritius surrendered in 1810. The Seychelles were separated from Mauritius in 1903 and became independent in 1976.
